Shopify theme detector: how to see a store's theme and apps
Of 29 stores we opened on 1 November 2026, 14 run a Shopify theme, and each shows it in the page source. Search the source for Shopify.theme: schema_name and theme_store_id name the real theme, while name is only the store's label for its copy.
14 Shopify themes among 29 stores advertising on Meta (United States, active ads; searches "free shipping", "shop now", "new arrivals"), from DTC brands to large retailers. Checked 1 November 2026.

Step 1: open the store and its page source
Open the store's home page, then its page source: right-click and choose View page source, or type view-source: before the address. Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) to search it.

Step 2: find the Shopify.theme line to see which theme the store uses
Search the source for Shopify.theme. Three fields matter: schema_name is the name of the theme the store is built on, theme_store_id is the theme's number in the Shopify Theme Store, and name is only what the store called its own copy of the theme.
On megelin.com the line reads: name MEGELIN-MAIN, schema_name Be Yours, theme_store_id 1399. Read only name and you would conclude the store runs a theme called MEGELIN-MAIN, which is not in the Theme Store. The real theme is Be Yours.
Confirm schema_name with theme_store_id, because the schema name can be edited too. davidoutwear.com shows schema_name David Outwear, but its theme_store_id is 857, the same number as larmossi.com, whose schema_name is Impulse. Both stores run Impulse; one renamed it. Numbers seen in this run: Dawn 887, Sense 1356, Prestige 855, Impulse 857, Envy 411, Testament 623, Be Yours 1399. A theme_store_id of null means the theme is not tied to a Theme Store listing, for example a custom build. It is not proof of a bespoke theme on its own: beautyfrombees.ca prints schema_name Dawn with a null ID, which usually means the theme was uploaded as a file or connected from a code repository rather than installed from the Theme Store; we did not check how this store installed it.

Step 3: a Shopify app detector by hand: see which apps a store uses
Apps leave two kinds of traces in the page source. The first is an app block: a script loaded from a path like /extensions/<id>/<app-handle>/assets/ on cdn.shopify.com. The handle, such as elevate-ab-testing-205, names the app. The second is a script from a third-party domain, for example static.klaviyo.com, loox.io or config.gorgias.chat. Search the source for /extensions/ for the first kind and scan the script addresses for the second.
On megelin.com the search finds four app blocks: affliate-by-secomapp, bucks-currency-converter, captain-shipping-protection and elevate-ab-testing. A handle shows which app is installed, not how it is set up, and an app that loads nothing on the home page will not show; check a product page and the cart too.

Step 4: no Shopify.theme line? Check /products.json
If the page prints no Shopify.theme line, add /products.json (or /cart.js) to the store's address. A Shopify store answers with JSON, the product list or the cart. Five sites in our run had Shopify code on the page but no theme line. What each shows: On the 14 stores that print a theme, /products.json returned a product list on 11 and a rate-limit reply (429) on 3; on the five sites above it returned 404 every time. That split is what makes it a useful second check.
- halara.com: the ad led to thehalara.com; both addresses redirect to www.halara.com, where /products.json returns 404.
- landing.rapidradios.com: a "Coming Soon" page.
- shop.ryzesuperfoods.com: the page code says "surface":"headless", a custom front end. The page does not show what runs behind it, and a headless store can run on Shopify.
- shop.pipitea.com and cc.uprootclean.com: they link to cdn.shopify.com, and /products.json returns 404.
A link to cdn.shopify.com does not prove a Shopify store; the test is /products.json or the Shopify.theme line.
What 29 stores advertising on Meta showed
We took advertisers from the Meta Ad Library: United States, active ads, searches for "free shipping", "shop now" and "new arrivals", in Meta's default order. The sample runs from small DTC brands to large retailers. The results held 35 addresses. We merged duplicates of one site (nordstrom.com and www.nordstrom.com; order.uprootclean.com, which returned 404, and cc.uprootclean.com) and excluded a marketplace (m.alibaba.com), leaving 32 sites. Three did not open: revolve.com timed out, and aldi.us and neimanmarcus.com refused access. We read the page source of the other 29 on 1 November 2026.
Nineteen of the 29 had Shopify code in the page; ten had no Shopify traces. Of the 19, fourteen printed a Shopify.theme line (the table); the other five are covered in step 4. Nine of the 14 had a theme_store_id; five had null.
Thirteen of the 14 had at least one app block; annecole.com had none.
Detectors vs the page source: why the theme name looks wrong
We compared the Shops section of the Spytrend directory with the page source on the 14 stores that printed a theme line, on 1 November 2026. It found 11. For hilarioushumanitarian.com there was no record; abeccagrace.com and canadagoose.com appeared only under another domain or subdomain, so we counted them as not found.
All 11 show the name field, the store's label, not schema_name; in two (Copy of Prestige | OPT, Updated copy of Updated copy of Impulse) the label happens to contain the theme's name, so it is not a reliable guide. For seven it matches the live name. For four it differs. Two carry an earlier label: flomattress.com showed Dussehra Sale | 16 - 19 Oct 2026 while the page source on 1 November read Grand Diwali Sale | 1 - 3 Nov 2026, and bohme.com an older sale name. sava-amsterdam.com shows a shortened name (SAVA - EU Monta), and annecole.com a different one (October). Whatever shows a theme name, confirm it with schema_name and theme_store_id in the page source.
Apps differ too. For the 11 stores it listed 74 app names, mostly apps with their own script (Klaviyo, Triple Whale, Microsoft Clarity), while the page source shows the theme's app blocks. Only 10 of the 74 names matched an app block in the code. For apps, read both sources. We did not test extensions such as Koala Inspector or PPSpy.
FAQ
What Shopify theme is this store using?
Open the store's page source and search for Shopify.theme. The schema_name field names the theme, and theme_store_id is its number in the Shopify Theme Store: 887 is Dawn, 857 is Impulse, 1399 is Be Yours. The name field is only the store's label for its copy.
Is there a free Shopify theme detector?
Yes. The page source of any store is free and needs no install: view-source and a search for Shopify.theme show the theme. Read the theme_store_id too, because the name field is only the store's label for its copy, and the schema name can be renamed as well.
How can I see what apps a Shopify store uses?
The page source gives the theme's app blocks: search it for /extensions/, where each path names an app handle such as judgeme or loop-returns. Third-party scripts appear in the script addresses, for example static.klaviyo.com or loox.io. Catalogues such as Spytrend Shops add apps that ship their own script. On 1 November 2026, 13 of 14 themed Shopify stores in our run showed at least one app block.
Why does a Shopify theme detector show a weird theme name?
Because the Shopify.theme data holds two names. The schema_name is the theme's own; the name is whatever the store typed, such as Grand Diwali Sale | 1 - 3 Nov 2026 or Copy of Prestige | OPT. Detectors that show the name field display the label, not the theme. The schema_name can be renamed as well, so the Theme Store number is the safest check.
Can you tell if a site is on Shopify?
Usually. A Shopify storefront prints a Shopify.theme line: 14 of the 29 sites we opened on 1 November 2026 did. If the line is missing, open /products.json on the same address. On those 14 stores it returned a product list 11 times and a rate-limit reply 3 times; on five more sites that only referenced Shopify files it returned 404 each time. Ten sites showed no Shopify traces at all.
